I’m blowing off work this morning to go ride while the trails are mostly empty. Anyone else on a 0 HP two-wheeler today? ETA: Driving home in something with more pedals than my bike is the cherry on top.

No, but I keep telling myself a need to get one again. I just wish that Illinois had more mountains (read: any). When I lived in Arizona I just “borrowed” my brother’s Gary Fisher hard tail every time we would go MTB.

My cousin blew my tire a couple years ago.

I haven’t fixed it. I’ve ridden a borrowed bike maybe once or twice since then.

Sometimes I want to go for a ride, then I remember the flat and remember that I’M.SICK.OF.FUCKING.FIXING.FLAT.BIKE.TIRES. Both my tubes have several patches and I’m sick of it.

I slightly shredded my tire yesterday - cut the sidewall. It was time for a new set anyway, they’re still the original set (6 yrs old) from Specialised and the knobs on the centre were almost gone anyways but it’s still a bit of a pisser. If I have time I’ll grab a new set of lobbies today/this weekend. Maybe some new drivetrain bits and brakes as well, they’re due for an update.

I'm a big fan of WTB tires and Shimano XT components.

Down here in South Texas thorns and rocks make flats a fact of life. I run slime tubes. Heavy, yes, but they stop 90% of it. Good tires help. I also stock up on tubes when they are on sale online and always carry a few on my camelbak backpack. Faster to swap a tube than mess with patches.

I rented a Gary Fisher bike back around 2002 in the central PA Laurel mountains. Best handling bike I've ever ridden. We don't have mountains here, but lots of dry creeks with big twists.

That’s one of the things that pissed me off... I finally replaced one of the tubes with one of those that’s supposed to be self-sealing, and the guy bursts it jumping instead.

At that point I think I decided subconciously that if I didn’t break it I didn’t have to fix it.

Next ride is planned for tomorrow morning! No trails, just pavement.

Saw some deer while taking a water break. We had a wet spring so lots to eat... They’re gonna be huge this fall.

Stan’s NoTubes! Just tried it out on my mountain bike, so far I like it! Supposed to be really good for punctures.

Rode my bike to work today! Like almost every day. It was actually stunningly beautiful and just the right temperature this morning.

Like 21 years ago, I called in sick to go riding. I did about 10 miles, and was on the easy part heading back to the park where I left my car, less than a mile from the end.

I came around this right hand sweeper with my right pedal down, and clipped a small stump. Before I knew it was on the ground, and I hit hard enough to crack my helmet. It was crazy.

I was glad to have my helmet on as I only saw one person on the ride, and that was as I was starting the ride. Without it, I probably would’ve been hurt, and laying there for a while since this was pre-everyone-has-a-cell-phone.

I had something similar about 10 years ago. Chain jumped while I was on it full power and tossed me on a road. Had my helmet. It was cracked. Haven't even ridden around a parking lot without a lid since.

Also, get yourself a rack! Your chassis looks like my Crosstrek. I installed a ecotech hidden hitch. It sits behind the bumper and was great for a hitch mounted bike rack!

Yes adding a hitch to the Forester is just for a hitch-mount bike rack is in the plans. I’ll check out Ecotech, thanks.

A quick note about racks too: I have a yakima rack and I really like it. But my friend went ahead and bought a Kuat NV.

Kinja'd!!!

I happened to get a crazy discount on the Yakima since my girlfriend worked for a shop that sells them, but if I was looking at full price for both the NV is worth the extra money. It’s rock solid on the hitch and is way easier to take on and off. Especially if your hitch pin hole is a little hard to get to (which it most likely will be on your car). This type of rack that holds the tires is great because it will fit any bike regardless of tire size, axle size, or frame geometry. And no disassembly of the bike is required. The only thing that trips it up is front fenders. Good luck with your search!

Oh, the kuat also has that sweet little repair stand attached as a bonus ;)

Ya me too. it took my first ride without a helmet to realize whizzing by trees without one was crazy.

At the time if you sent the helmet back to Bell with the details of the crash, they’d send you a new helmet for $30, along with a “Saved by the BELL” certificate

Neat! I was probably going to go with Yakima just because the Subaru-branded roof mount I have for my wife’s Outback is a re-badged Yakima and I like it a lot, but I’ll check that one out.

As I said, I have the Yakima and like it. Another bit to look at specifically is the tilt mechanism. The Yakima has a pull-pin on one side, and a free floating pin on the other that is kept attached by a small cable. The free pin is heavy enough to break the plastic piece attaching it to the frame of the rack (which is annoying) and the tilting of the rack is made fiddly by having to remove and replace the free pin. The kuat has a through pin with a quick release mounted in a slot. Much more robust and less fiddly. Which also leads to less rocking on the vehicle compared to the Yakima, which wobbles slightly.

Perhaps this is too much info, but as an enthusiast, this is the kind of stuff I usually want to know haha
